Elaine Chen received her B.A. in German Studies, with a minor in Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies, from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) in 2016. In 2017, she returned to complete an M.A. in German Studies; her thesis entitled “A Portrait of the Artist as a Dead Man: Thomas Mann and Stefan Zweig’s Receptions of Kleist’s Literary Suicide(s)” explores the impact of Kleist’s stories, life, and death on Mann and Zweig’s relationship as two of the most prominent Novelle-authors of the 20th century, as well as on both authors’ works.
